Map
Phuket is Thailand's largest island, nestles against the Andaman Sea and is about 850boating(1).jpg (5794 bytes) kilometers from Bangkok.  Sparsely populated outside Phuket town, the landscape is one of lush green hills, coconut groves, rubber plantations and a coastline dotted with a dozen spectacular beaches.
Shaped like an irregular pearl and measuring approximately 21 kilometers wide by 48 kilometers long,
Linked to the mainland by a causeway and situated just an hour's flight from Bangkok, the island is as accessible as it is beautiful. Sea and sand are the great lures for the average visitor to Phuket,

Patong Beach
The island's most developed and popular beach, it is a four-kilometre stretch of white sand, dotted with hotels, restaurants and bars. Like Pattaya, it is a place of lively and exciting nightlife. Patong is also ideal for sea and shore activities, wind-surfing, para-gliding such as snorkeling and other water sports.

It is another very popular beach, especially for swimmers. Bungalows and a variety of cottage-style hotel accommodations are abound. It is also a scene of a vibrant night scene.

Kata Beach

Dominated by the luxurious Club Med and the Kata Thani, it lies further south. On Kata Yai beach visitors can find affordable bungalows. Sands, corals and clean water are among the foremost attractions.

Kamala Beach
Less exploited by modernisation, Kamala is a nice beach with a sprawling beachside village. Some basic accommodations, run by islanders, are in the Bt60-100 range. With its large and quiet sandy beach, Kamala is the place to go if you want to meet the islanders.

Pansea Beach

This one boasts of fascinating sea animals and turtles. It has been declared a National Park, but is still open to tourists.

Rawai Beach
Rawai is a shallow, rather silty bay that makes it less popular with swimmers than those to the west. A community of sea gypsies lives at one end of one bay.

Phuket Town
phuket Town which was founded by Chinese and Malaysian merchants about a century ago. Perhaps because of its origins, the atmosphere of the town is less Thai than Malay, with older buildings in the Sino-Portugese style of Malacca and open storm drains along the arcaded streets. There are still grand old Chinese houses, often with elaborately carved doors and windows, to provide pleasant surprises during a stroll through the downtown area. The oldest public buildings are Government House, used as a locale in The Killing Fields and across the road, the Provincial Court, both of which date from the early years of this century.
The main attractions of Phuket Town are the local markets. The public market on Rasada Street is Thai shopping in all its glory. Her you will be engulfed by an intoxicating blend of sights, sounds and smells.
