Profile of exotic Thailand

Situated in the heart of Southeast Asia and as a gateway to Indochina. Thailand borders Lao PDR in the north and northeast; the Union of Myanmar in the north and west; the Andaman Sea in the west; Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand in the east; and Malaysia in the south. Thailand covers a land area of 513,115 square kilometres, roughly the size of France, and extends about 1,620 kilometres from north to south and 775 kilometres from east to west. Topographically the country is divided into four distinct areas: the mountainous North, the Fertile Central Plains, the semi-arid plateau of the Northeast, and the peninsula South.

Population

Thailand's population of about 66 million people. Along with the ethnic Thais, who make up around 80 percent of the population, there are significant groups of Chinese (about 10 percent), Malays (about 4 percent), Lao, Mons, Khmers, Indians, and Burmese - reflecting this country's long history at the crossroads of Southeast Asia.

Climate
Thailand has a tropical climate with three distinct seasons: summer (March-May), Rainy with plenty of sunshine (June-September), and cool (October-February). Average temperatures are around 27 c.

Religion
The national religion is Theravada Buddhism, practised by more than 80 per cent of all Thais, The remainder of the population adheres to Muslim, Christian, Hindu and other faiths all of which are allowed full freedom of expression. Buddhism continues to cast a strong influences on daily life.
